Description

The 8hr PA Fish & Boat Commission's PA Basic Boating Course was developed to supply boaters with practical information so they can make better informed decisions on the water.  Instructors provide students with information to help them reduce the risk of injury and conflict on the water.

The course was designed for Pennsylvania's recreational power boaters.  However, it can be presented to any group or individual interested in boating or boating safety.  For fire departments that have water/river rescue duties, this course usually is a required/expected entry level for interested responders. For police departments that have boating opportunities in their jurisdiction this course will better equip the officer with aspects of Title 30 (PA Fish & Boat Code) so they can be better informed of the law and even report violations to Waterways Conservation Officers for enforcement.

Boating Safety Education Certificates are required for all operators of personal watercraft (i.e. Sea-Doo, Jet Ski, Wave Runner), and for boat operators born after January 1, 1982 that operate motorboats of more than 25 horsepower.  Students who successfully complete this course may apply for a Boating Safety Education Certificate issued by the Commission.  To receive a Boating Safety Education Certificate, the student must send a check or money order for $10.00 to the Commission.  The PA Basic Boating course meets the mandatory education standards set by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) for motorboat operation and Commission certification is accepted in most states with mandatory education requirements.

This course presents information via lecture, video, answer and discussion on boating and water safety and contains six chapters followed by a 50-question multiple-choice test.  A passing grade of 80% must be achieved
